Acupuncture for quitting smoking: what works better

October 15, 2026Zento editorial

In short

  • Reviews of the evidence do not find acupuncture more effective than sham for long-term smoking cessation.
  • What does work: stop-smoking medication, nicotine replacement, and behavioral support, and most of all, the combination.
  • In California, free telephone coaching and support is available through the state quitline.
  • If acupuncture helps you feel supported while you use a treatment that works, that is a reasonable addition, not a substitute.

Being straight about the evidence

Acupuncture and auricular (ear) acupuncture have been studied repeatedly for smoking cessation. The overall conclusion from systematic reviews is consistent and not encouraging: there is no reliable evidence that acupuncture helps people stop smoking in the long term when compared with sham treatment.

Some trials show a short-term effect on cravings, and quit rates in the first weeks sometimes look better. Sustained abstinence at six and twelve months, which is the outcome that matters, does not hold up.

We would rather say that plainly than sell you a course of treatment. Quitting smoking is the single most valuable thing most smokers can do for their health, and it deserves the methods with the best evidence.

What actually raises your chance of quitting

Medication. Prescription stop-smoking medication roughly doubles or better the chance of success compared with willpower alone. Discuss the options with a physician or pharmacist.

Nicotine replacement. Patches combined with a fast-acting form (gum, lozenge, inhalator) work better than either alone. Many people under-dose and stop too early.

Behavioral support. Counselling, group programs and telephone coaching add substantially to medication. The combination of medication and support is far more effective than either on its own.

In California, Kick It California provides free coaching by phone and text, and is available in several languages. Your physician can also refer you to local cessation services.

Acupuncture sits alongside medical care, not in place of it. Keep any treatment your physician has prescribed, and tell your acupuncturist about it.

If you still want to include acupuncture

Some people find weekly sessions useful as structure and support through the hardest weeks, and that is not nothing. If you choose it, use it in addition to medication or nicotine replacement and behavioral support, not instead. Be wary of packages sold as a guaranteed or one-session cure. That claim is not supportable.

What to watch for

  • Guaranteed quit rates, or a single-session cure.
  • Advice to avoid nicotine replacement or prescribed medication.
  • Large packages paid upfront.
  • Ear seeds or studs sold with strong claims. The evidence does not support them.
  • Any suggestion that cravings mean the treatment is detoxifying you.

Frequently asked questions

Does acupuncture help you quit smoking?
Systematic reviews do not find it more effective than sham treatment for long-term quitting. Some short-term craving effects appear in studies, but sustained abstinence at six to twelve months does not hold up. Treatments with far better evidence exist.
What works best for quitting?
The combination of stop-smoking medication or nicotine replacement with behavioral support. Patches plus a fast-acting form such as gum or lozenge beats either alone, and adding coaching improves results further.
Is ear acupuncture or are ear seeds effective for cravings?
Auricular acupuncture has been studied specifically for smoking cessation and has not been shown to produce lasting benefit over sham. Ear seeds are marketed heavily; the evidence does not support the claims made for them.
Is there free help to quit in California?
Yes. Kick It California offers free coaching by phone and text in multiple languages, and your physician can refer you to local services and prescribe medication. Cost should not be the barrier.
Could acupuncture still be worth it alongside other methods?
Possibly, as support and structure through a hard few weeks, provided you are also using a method that works and nobody is charging you a large sum on the promise of a cure.
